Product Description

The StreetPilot c340 provides in-car navigation that is simple for anyone to use directly out of the box. After selecting a destination from the user-friendly touch screen interface, Garmins text-to-speech feature tells users the name of the street, when to turn, and in what direction. If you miss your turn, the c340 automatically calculates a new route to the destination. Notification of traffic delays is a c340 option that lets drivers see congested areas via a color-coded map. This feature lets users avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route. This traffic awareness is made possible via the new Garmin GTM 10 FM TMC receiver that connects to selected Garmin street navigation products. The GTM 10 receives digital data from specific FM broadcast stations in select major metro areas throughout the United States and Europe.

Got as a gift a few years ago, we use this every time we travel and it has been a solid, reliable performer. It seems to be unaffected by the hot sun & cold winter (when left in the vehicle) and powered on every time. The battery life is not what it used to be, no problem - just plug it in. The roads were starting to get out-of-date but as luck would have it, and since Garmin is very popular, we happened to come across someone who had a set of unlocked 2010 city nav maps who was willing to barter with some pizza and beer :) All we needed was a 2gb SD card to load up the maps. There were a lot of firmware updates which allegedly improved it further (but worked great for us so far), and some additional voice accents (we chose a couple of new British voices just for variety).

We were considering purchasing a new unit but now used those funds to get a handheld I can use on my motorcycle and hiking. This unit, as a refurb at ~$130 or so it is an excellent basic no-frills GPS unit. If you are considering a refurb or hand-me-down this unit will not be a bad choice at all.

This unit is awesome. I purchased this about a year ago and it has never let me down. It's built tough and has stood up well to being left in the car under the Florida sun. It does come pre-loaded with the all 50 US states and European maps but is does need to be updated once in a while if there has been a lot of road construction in your area, However Garmin makes it a snap to do on line.
I purchased this product after talking to a several people who have owned different brands of GPS and reading customer reviews. Every single person said that they wished that they had got the Garmin, or were very satisfied with the purchase of one. I second every positive review and compliment of this product. I wouldn't even look at other GPS devices. Garmin hit one out of the park with this product and that's why it's still on the market after almost five years, you can't compete with perfection. I recommend this to any one who likes to make a one time purchase regardless of the price. Buy it, you wont regret it.

I originally purchased this Model Garmin Street Pilot in 2006 from Amazon. At the time the purchase price was over $350.00. Unfortunately it was stolen out of our vehicle a few weeks before I sought to replace it, again, on Amazon. This model now went for a much better price of under $200.00. With all the very expensive navigation systems out there this model is by far the best value for the price. It gives turn by turn instructions. It stores locations for you and travels well in a soft pouch carrying case when not being used in your vehicle. I strongly suggest from experience not to leave it in the vehicle when not in use!! The only draw back I noticed was unless I haven't discovered it yet there doesn't seem to be a way to back up your locations on your computer in the event that it is stolen or misplaced. Overall I was pleased with this purchase.

I received this item as a gift during the last holiday season. I was quite disappointed as it costs 3x some of the newer models and had a map pack from 2007 on there. I expected them to update the product upon registering it but NOOOOO.

I emailed Garmin and was told to take a hike that if I wanted the latest maps then I would have to buy the latest. This was after finding out that the gift giver paid almost $300.00 for the item in December 2008. Even now when I write the review the product is still being sold for two hundred and is old and out of date.

Buyer beware as you can do much better buying the newer versions that have more up to date maps and additional features!

NEW SECTION - (8/2009)
I am adding this section after having repeated incidents with my GPS unit over the past months. It has done everything from sent me on a 25 mile detour to get on a highway that was right next to us, to bringing us to businesses that are not there. For example, on multiple occasions we have put in Subway in different parts of New England only to arrive and find out that Subway is not there and either was never there, or they moved 11 years ago. Ummmmm....

At this point I really regret purchasing Garmin GPS devices as we purchased 3 of them over the last holiday season. The map packs are a rip-off and are only updated once/year so by the time you get them installed there could be things that have come and gone. I don't expect instant updates but I do expect that if something is gone for over a year then it would not be showing up on my GPS. Why not have a monthly update and charge $5/month instead of charging people the same in one big chunk once/year and having everything be way behind?

Word to wise with these - DO NOT use the GPS to get you someplace you already know how to find. Chances are you will do a much better job than these this could ever dream of!

Word to the wise pt II - this DOES NOT distinguish at all (even though the settings are programmed for it) between roads that go right through a city and have 25mph speed limits with 85 stop lights, and 250 crosswalks versus a highway that can travel at 65mph.

What a nightmare. Right now I'm back to printing directions out of Google Maps when I want to go somewhere and find the best and the fastest route. I'm hoping Google releases a GPS device in the near future or starts selling their mapping to GPS manufacturers!

I am very happy with my factory refurbished Garmin GPS. Customer service is outstanding. It is extremely easy to program. I have not had it very long so I gave it 4 stars. If it continues at this level of all around satisfaction I will give it 5 stars.
