Dataman Bill ( Palatine IL )
Nice compact unit with built Tourbook AAA. The unit does a good job for me from point A to point B. I had a problem with a software update and had to send a unit of Magellan. They retuned another unit within a week. The update is a big improvement, with additional custom buttons, QWERTY keyboard and the automatic change time zone. It 'was very good in a recent trip I took from Chicago to Virginia. When traveling in PA, we were able to pull up restaurants in GPS when traveling to call ahead for hours and make a reservation to come down quickly. The course was good.

I thought that if one is traveling off the beaten path, not necessarily choose the best or the fastest route. For example, on a trip to Burlington, WI, GPS sent me 20 miles off the road and added an additional 1 / 2 hour to my travel time. Also, I was parked in a shopping center in Lexington, KY in search of a Starbucks, the nearest was 0.3 miles away. The GPS found me in the parking lot, so he gave me a ride on the road to get there. When we arrived, we recognize the mall throughout the game. I truly need a cup of coffee.

I also bought the connecting traffic. He saved me from traveling from Indianapolis to Chicago by re-routing me around crowded fast. However, I also received warnings that have been children. Thus, the jury is still out.

I can not understand the spoken instructions from this unit. I drive a Ford F250 diesel truck and when they turn up the volume loud enough to hear the sound of the engine, the instructions are incomplete and unbalanced. I have to look at the screen to find out where you want to go instead of hearing his voice. ... Becomes a bit 'dangerous while driving.

The screen is small, but you get what you pay for. This is a low end unit. I would say that if you don't have a vehicle that has a lot of engine noise, this unit is ok. But if you do have a lot of engine noise, definitely buy something else.

This is the second GPS unit I've ever had. The first is an older model with a small screen Garmin in black and white. I used a religious, probably 5 years in the United States, Canada, Hawaii and even, without any problem. In particular, I've never had my Garmin routing me crazy from point A to point B. At first power of this unit, I was impressed with the user interface pleasant. I never had to open the user manual at all. It 'was a breeze to find. However, the user interface is not the most important feature of a GPS unit. It 'important that the unit does its job - to get where you want to go. My first trip - a trip of 20 miles across the city - I met the problem immediately. Mind you, I was not in a new area with new roads.

I started in a city that has more than 100 years, and Magellan GPS made me go the way I knew I turned right, then turn right onto the street right next to each other, then turn left onto I crossed the street. There were no problems just by turning on the right the right way, but the Magellan took me away, "Overview", in a residential neighborhood. I was so fascinated by where I was routing followed me like an idiot, but I knew that I had missed my turn. Let's just say you do not want that to happen in a bad part of town, where the scenic route, which could mean driving in a dark alleyway or street when you could be on a main road. I used this disk, maybe 4-5 times after the first experience, and it worked. However, first impressions are lasting, and it will take time to put this experience behind us and believing in this unity. Again, my Garmin was a trusted co-pilot for many years. I even named her--Carmen my Garmin. Then, I kicked her to the curb when a better looking co-pilot came along. If Maggie my Magellan turns out to be a dimwit, I still have Carmen in her pouch.

For 1/2 the price of other GPS units (including refurbs), this unit does what it is supposed to do. It won't give you the quickest route if you already know where you are traveling (like to your home as one reviewer mentioned), but that's not the purpose of a GPS as I see it.

If you are traveling in an area you do not know or trying to find an address, then this does what it is supposed to do.

The fact that it speaks the street names and exits is an extra plus that was not on some of the other comparable units.

The maps may be two years old, but so are most of the roads, so not a big deal.

We've had ours less than a month and was very satisfied with it and how it told you the exact name of the roads that you needed to go but then it stopped working. Dead. It was a big price to pay for such a short time of use. I would have recommended it up until this happened.

Ed Turney ( DFW )
I thought I would spend a little more and get the traffic option. It works, but here's the catch. You have to endure advertisements. Little advertisements for banks, drugstores, etc. scroll across the screen at different times during your route. 5 stars would have been my rating except for this invasion.

B. Bowman ( Indiana )
This GPS is great and the Amazon price was unbeatable. It also gives names of hotels and restaurants at upcoming exits. Very user friendly. I would definitely recommend.

Good thing Amazon provides a 30 day return policy. I bought this unit because I had great experiences with my 5 year old subscription based Magellan GPS. But right out of the box the Traffic Link did not work. I called Magellan's tech support to figure out the problem. After 90 minutes of trying to explain to someone across the globe that traffic coverage should be pretty solid in Los Angeles and I was getting no signal - only the message "acquiring signal" they agreed to replace the Traffic Link. About a week later it showed up via FedEx Ground. Once again, excited I plugged the unit in and headed for a 200 mile day trip in LA. NOT ONCE did it ever acquire the signal. I called Magellan and once again spoke to someone across the globe who apparently never heard of Los Angeles or the awful traffic here. They kicked me around for another 90 minutes to arrive at a supervisor who said I had two options - send it in to Magellan for repair - at my cost - or return it to the retailer I bought it from.
If the Traffic Link would have worked with either adapter I would have kept the unit. It's boxed and ready for drop off to return to Amazon.
Be very careful. If it doesn't work out of the box then return it immediately to Amazon. Do NOT mess with Magellan. I wasted 2.5 weeks of waiting and 3 hours on the phone with them. Don't you have better things to do?

K. Preston ( Montclair, CA )
I recently purchased one of these units and this past weekend tried it out on a trip from the Pomona, CA area to Fresno, CA and back. All the features worked perfectly. I was really impressed with the "lane assist" feature. It not only alerted me of the proper lane to be in in the LA area, but also in Fresno. Although the integrated "traffic alert" didn't advise me of any traffic issues, (there weren't any on this trip) I did see the "advertisement" displayed on the screen. It is so small and well positioned, it is not a problem at all.

All in all, I think this is a fantastic GPS with a lot of great features for the money.

I also have a Garmin Nuvi 260W that works great also, for a few more dollars, you get a lot more features with the Magellan 1445T.

I bought this unit so I have a GPS when I'm on the road using rental trucks or rental cars. The unit is basic but it guided me to the target on the first trip. Half a year later, I rented another truck and the unit booted up but the screen does not respond. I did hard resets but no change. There is also NO SUPPORT for Macs. You need to have a PC to update the unit. If you use Parallels, you might have a chance. For the next GPS, I would choose a Garmin as they support Apple computers.

Bruce K. Gessel ( Northern Virginia )
This works OK but was bought because of its "text to speech" feature as advertised. It does not appear to have this feature as it works just about like my old Tom Tom One.

I really like this GPS. The screen is large. The volume is plenty loud enough. I keep the volume set at medium. At dusk it switches from a bright to a dark screen. The voice is pleasant and easy to understand. It is easy to enter street data. The directions are accurate.

I give the device a mediocre review for two reasons. I purchased two (not from amazon). Both were new and the battery would not hold a charge. However, it is easily replaced for about $19. The second bad thing is that the unit will freeze up and need to be reset. This has only happened on start up. It is easily reset by pressing the reset button on the back with a pen.

Spacecowboy ( Seattle, WA )
We've own this Magellan 5310 now for about a year now and are very happy with it. And we're pretty pleased with it because it has taken us from point A to point B very reliably. We live in the Snohomish County in the State of Washington and whenever we drive in to Seattle it is like hell on wheels. After our more than 50 trips into Seattle we are now sort of comfortable with the city's layout but not really. Our Magellan gets us in and out of Seattle to clinics and restaurants to theatres in surprisingly quick routes. When our Magellan says we have arrived, "quoila" there it is. Always to our surprise! And we are surprised because we get to our destination by simply following the voiced instructions and the easy to read directions on the screen. It has audio prompts to indicate when to actually make a turn and instructions as to how far your are away from making those turns with eg.'right turn in 3/10th of a mile'. It also handles multiple turns quite well too. For example it lets you know that you will be making a right turn and another right turn right after the other. So it prepares you quite well without the stress that use to accoompany our trips into the unknown.
I cannot comment on the customer service because I have never used it. The battery does not last very long so it requires it to be plugged into the cigarette lighter at all times. The unit that we have has completely dropped the map from its memory when the battery completely depleted itself and to get it back it lets you know that you should go to the Magellan site to recover full functionality in a matter of seconds after making connection. We are quite computer and device savvy however.
One more comment I would add is that when you look at the customer review ratings between Tom Tom, Magellan and Garmin the graph depiction from excellent to poor is about the same. Didn't the smart phone business have about the same graph shape just before Apple showed up with the iphone?
......................................................

Jon R. Sirkis ( Northern Virginia )
Hmm, where to begin....

The menues are generall buried and complex. Yes, you really should not be driving while messing with the menues. Startup is slow, but I have only owned one other and it too is slow.

The graphics are large; the only bummer here is sometimes it places green roads on green backgrounds - yes, the exact same shade of green. This happens at unpredictable intervals.

The real issue is the navigation system itself. I used it against known destinations, and it failed repeatedly. Some times it took me 10's of miles out of my way on a slower route when I asked for "fastest route". I live in the greater DC area - sometimes it took me away from the highways, managing to avoid both the shortest and the fastest routes. I literally have no idea where it thought it was going. On shortest route, it often took me to dead ends. No, not ones that were created by new construction, but to places that have been static for over a decade.

I would not recommend anyone buy this unit. You are better off with a city map, even in heavy traffic. At least you won't have to worry about potentially dangerous artificial detours in the midst of a big city.

Jon

Well, I've used a few GPS's now, and this one is best remembered as a great 2nd rear view mirror. The picture is quite good, unless the sun is out and shining into your car, then the picture is GONE! You can see your rear seat passengers pretty good though, so that is a plus.

Actually, the units works well, but you can't see it.

Too bad.

This is a pretty good GPS unit for the money spent ($110.00). So far happy with the way it works and the features it has. Even though i am not a regular user of this, i had a decent experience when ever i took it for a ride. especially i like the line change/merger assistance it has graphically. They could have done a little more work on the sound quality when connecting through the Blue-tooth to take calls on the mobile. Overall, worth the price.

All these things screw up once in a while, but this is as good as any out there, and for 120 bucks and a year of free traffic update service (or was it 6 months ?) you cannot get a better GPS. It is popular with thieves, also; I have had to buy 4 of them due to Atlanta democrats stealing 3 from my vehicles.

Hello out there,
We received a different GPS that we prefer to keep and want to return this one. I have gotten 2 e-mails from Comp USA, but still haven't sent the return authorization or mailing label> What do I need to do to get them to respond?

Joseph Laslo ( Astoria , Oregon )
First the Pro's of this GPS unit : The wide screen is great compared to a few other GPS units I have owned in the past and easy to see the roads and points of interest. It was very easy to install on the windsheild with the suction adaptor included plus its easy to remove the unit by just a lift of the lock. It came with a 90 day free trial of road hazard warning and traffic back up to give you an option of detour to avoid the area before you came to it. Nice slim unit about the thickness of a deck of cards so if you wanted you can disconnect it and put it into your pocket if you were in an area known for high theft . The lovely womans voice is pleasant to hear which you can adjust the volume to suit your needs. Screen changes as night comes to give you a night view of the area which I found interesting.

Cons : Being a brand new GPS I was very dissapointed that the maps had not been updated for many years it seems . We type in Costco which has been here for over 15 years and it never showed up nor the road it is on . After calling tech support and explaining the problem we had to pay another ten dollars ( for shipping ) to recieve the new spring 2009 map disk update . Everything works okay now and roads and business's now show up . The so called free 90 day traffic hazard never has worked and we have gone past ( and been in ) several road construction projects that's been going on for a few years on state highways and county roads, PLUS we have been in traffic back ups from accidents and rush hour traffic and the GPS never gave any warning whatsoever, so that feature does not work at all and would be a waste of money for this unit. The touch screen being new of course is hard to hit with your finger but using the eraser end of a pencil works okay for the time being .

If you plan on buying this unit be prepared to fork out another ten dollars to get the updated maps from magellan, plus don't bother paying for a subscription for their traffic alert program. Just use the 90 day free trial and see if it ever gives you road warning or not.

P. Chazhikat ( Missouri City, TX USA )
THIS IS A REALLY BAD GPS. I HAD TO RETURN IT TO THE COMPANY. AND THEY GAVE ME A REFURBISHED SYSTEM. THE REFURBISHED UNIT WAS BETTER THAN THE NEW UNIT. YOU SHOULDN'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A NEW UNIT. JUST BUY A REFURBISHED UNIT.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
