This is an item that Tom Tom should have included with the GPS! Having the ability to charge the batteries from a wall outlet without a computer available and an is essential.

I've been using this software for a number of years and love it.

Via the PC "TomTom Home" program, TomTom will offer you an updated map to buy. Beware, this dates from 2007. There are no newer maps available, nor will there be as TomTom have ceased all support for this version.

There is no new version that will run on my HP IPAQ so I have to buy a new SatNav or put up with old maps.

Thank you TomTom!

Hi!

I started using my Trusted IPAQ 4155 (Running Pocket PC2003) with the Navigator 5 back in January 2006. Back then it came in six Cd's. I got so used to it that I transferred it to my AT&T phone HTC8525 (that ran Windows mobile 5). I kept using the Tom Tom Navigator 5, Ver 5.1 for three years in a row without a hitch. "Tom Tom home" is not compatible as it was not available back then and it is not needed to install Navigator 5. This installation software is the only problem that i have found. The installation Cd that came with the NAV5 package helped with the installation on the IPAQ and the HTC8525. The big problem came when I changed to a Verizon/Audiovox XV6700 that runs WM5. This is basically the same phone as the HTC 8525, the phones look almost identical, but I found out too late that Tom Tom and HTC were partners and that my Navigator software was not "designed" nor "approved " to work with the Verizon/ Audiovox XV6700. In order to make it work, You have to manually load the maps into the new Memory card, find the .CAB file on the installation files, then load it to the phone memory and from within the phone, install the .cab file, once it loads the setup program in the phone, it's just a matter of telling the Tom Tom Navigator program where the maps are located. You have to keep the same folder structure as you had in the IPAQ and the 8525 and it works Ok. You have to "rip"(copy and paste) the maps from the CD's to the Computer Desktop, then transfer them to the memory card, then put the memory card on the phone. The only thing that only works sometimes is the "Navigate To" feature. Originally in the IPAQ and the 8525 you can open your Outlook Contacts, select any contact, then open the "Menu" tab and there is an option there that you can "Navigate to", once selected, the Tom Tom programs (both NAV 5 and 6 ) opens automatically, shows the address on the map, turns on the bluetooth connection (it's looking for the GPS transmitter that you have to turn on yourself) and calculates the route. This feature only works intermittently on the XV6700, but i can live with that. I bought the navigator 6 just for fun (and it was a cheap way to get my hands on a brand new bluetooth receiver!), I wanted to use the Tom Tom Home feature, but it's quite unstable in Windows Vista. I had to try it at least 5 times to install it correctly, and it takes FOREVER to load the DVD maps onto a clean and new Ipaq Memory card.
You are off the reservation with this software. You need to understand the phone you have, join into a discussion group related to your phone and be able to tinker with it with no fear(google your phone model# and "hack"), what's the worst that can happen? a hard reset? that's why you have the CD's/DVD. Reload it and move on. If you do a hard reset the maps stay on the card, so all you have to do is reload the installer software, re enter the installation key and move on.

Tom Tom Navigator 6 Software with Maps of the US and Canada (DVD) and Bluetooth GPS Receiver. Loaded the DVD software onto a computer running XP with no problems. Selected maps of areas of the USA I needed most and sync with HTC Kaiser phone placing program and maps onto phone storage card section. Received an error message at first that software could not locate map, but resolved on second attempt. I have not used software whilst driving yet so cannot review that important aspect.I was satisifed with ease of installation.

While it is very cool having my palm centro act as a GPS map aid using a keychain bluetooth GPS receiver, I have to give this product the lowest rating for one major reason: tom tom doesn't provide map updates. Even if they did, updates for four regions would end up costing 150% more than the this software which includes dozens of maps.

Briefly, I love the help the GPS brings, but the cost for map updates is too high. It's nearly the cost for the refurbished device. I've never had to spend $200 on maps before; I'm not sure the benefits of a GPS is that high.

the TOM TOM 130S is a great GPS. very small and compact, easy to use, easy to personalize. Once i updated the map (free), it worked great. Excellent GPS

First of all I have to say that I bought it as factory refurbished and seen no different with the brand new one.
The map was easily updated and in order to use the S function you have to use the computer voice not the human voices.(This issue made me confused for awhile)

In the city the maps seem to be good so far but I live in a more spread out rural area with about 70,000 people surrounding Wasilla, Alaska and the maps need serious improvements. Many roads on there that do not exist and many that are there but not on the map. putting an address in to find the destination is usually a lost cause, sends you to the wrong place. Not at all impressed with the local maps. Mostly just sits on my desk at home now because it is useless here.

IHS Electric LLC ( New Jersey )
The street names are only available in computer voice. The programing apparently has a limited space for the sound bytes for the street name. If it is a longer one, it comes out run together like "MartinLutherKing" Boulevard. Boulevard comes out slower, but that is less important.
The "English-USA" computer voice still has a foreign accent. That combination makes the Street name option in voice navigation useless.
Bluetooth fails to connect more often than not.
Tom-Tom parts are shipped incorrect, and stock listing on their web site is wrong.
Routing is excellent!
Route recovery, planning, and corrections are Excellent!
Why a picture viewer on a navigator that warns you to keep your eyes on the road?

At the time of purchase I wanted a "top of the line" unit. In fact I just needed 4.3" screen and text to speech and paid top bucks for features that are now standard. I paid $500 in September 2007. I expected many years of service in return for the hefty price tag. At least there was a solid 2 years warranty on the unit as the store told me. WRONG. When I needed the warranty I went on the web and found out that Tom Tom America was just in between switching their warranty policies to make them more local. Go 710 (or a unit bough before certain date early in 2007) still carries 2 years warranty. Starting with Go 720 you are cut short. The store, of course, was not updated on this issue and I was mistakingly let to believe the warranty was solid. Boy, I needed the warranty. Now I am stuck with a dead body after less then two years of service (the date of review is 8 months later).

At first, shortly before the first year was over the unit started turning blank while in usage. It was still giving directions but the screen went blank. You tapped the screen and the picture vent on. Then after some 15 seconds it started dying again. You tapped it. Again. Again. It was an intermittent issue. Some days it still worked fine and then it turned bad again. I missed my chance to have it serviced back then as I was relying on the ...bullet proof 2 years warranty. It was VERY annoying but still drivable. Thus I failed to have it serviced. Now it is gone.

Come on TomTom!!! $500 for less than two years of UNRELIABLE service?!

As other users complain, the battery started dying soon in the life of the unit. You HAD TO plug it in. (There was no way to use it as a standalone unit like you wanted WALK with it downtown.)
Of course it did not hold on the windshield. Right in the middle of a dangerous turn it could fall on you. And into dangerous turns it drove you. In downtown Boston it sent me round the circle (as I refused to turn into one way in the wrong direction the device wanted to drive me). It indicated turns LATE and then you could have LONG detours to make up for.

I am giving it two stars for the following saving graces:

Fast on the fly recalculations and re-routing.
The screen was bright visible in all conditions (when it worked).

Regarding the battery somewhere I saw a d-i-y instructable for replacing the battery. I think it was for older Go units but this useless unit can now be ripped with no loss anyway. There is a regular li-on battery that is pretty much standard for any electronics of this type.

TomTom is grasping with this "calculated obsolescence". Taking lead from Apple, Amazon Kindle II and similar. BAD.

Tomtom 720 delivers. No problems with downloading maps or voices. Paired with my mobile easily. Available voices are enough.
......................................................

Charlie ( Boston, MA )
I had a lot of bad luck with this device. Although the website indicates that the there is a two year warranty for this product. The fine print indicates that this warranty only applies to gps' purchased before April 2007. For products purchased after 07, there is only a one year warranty. This was very misleading and TomTom offers no support for my device which is basically a doorstop 14 months after purchase. When it worked, which wasn't long, I found it to be a bit clunky and the interface was confusing. I will try my luck with the Garmin next time around.

I used this device and relied on it to travel to Illinois from Minnesota, and it worked like a charm. It has the bare to the bones necessities that you would need when traveling, and they work great. I love having someone tell me to turn when I need to when traveling through long 300 mile interstates and in town roads. Thank you tom tom.

but once you do, it is great the only anoying thing is the Tom voice which is the only voice that gives you the street names, I will see if there is a possibility of purchasing another voice, I recommend it to anyone that is going on a trip to a new city but I also recommend to keep a map in your car. Why? because it is very useful too and we shouldn't be relaying on computers for everything :)
......................................................

RVD ( Los Angeles, CA )
I bought this for the price and haven't been disappointed. It's a small-ish screen, but it works well for me. I find the street name pronunciation to be an essential feature, even if the voice isn't always immediately intelligible.
......................................................

Jim ( Rochester Hills, MI USA )
While the unit works, it does not have some of the features TomTom's website indicates it should have. This is not Amazon's fault--TomTom's website advertises features not contained in the units, no matter who you purchase it from.

There is no email address to contact TomTom and customer service (phone) indicated "You're Right", when I pointed out the features were not on the unit. When I finally found an email to the company, they also agreed the unit does not have the features advertised but refused to do anything about it. They recommended I pursue it with Amazon. BBB has been contacted for assistance.

Suggest you purchase a Garmin or Magellan unit instead for better customer support.

Tracy Oshima ( Long Beach, California )
The GO 930 hasn't let me down in the six months that I've owned it. The 4.3 inch screen shows maps very crisply and the large size makes it easy to view directions while driving. The directions have been very accurate and I have not gotten lost once since owning it! I am most impressed with the IQ Routes feature, it gives the best shortcuts allowing me to not be stuck in traffic unnecessarily. This helps me cut down the time I am in the car. All in all, I am happy with the GO 930.

Hyperboloid ( Philadelphia, PA USA )
This is my thrird TomTom GO, and my last one.

Cons:
- Maximum display brightness is much darker than on my GO 920
- Bluetooth remote takes 10 sec to connect
- Bluetooth remote works for the first three times after turning the device on, then no longer. You have to reset the unit (!) for it to work again, very annoying!
- One button on the Bluetooth remote requires you to push it hard in order for it to detect you pressed the button.
- Accuracy of house numbers is not perfect - sometimes 0.2 miles away.
- TomTom seems to be reluctant to fix such issues and instead rests assured that nobody will return the product for 2 weeks repair since they may not be able to live without it for so long.

My husband works in IT for a living and is very gadget savvy. Even he was not able to navigate through the mess that Tom Tom took us through. You would think that a unit that costs more than $400 would be packed with features and run effortlessly, not the case at all! We have had all kinds of errors, such as file access errors, random shutting down and rebooting, being unable to find a route ANYWHERE from certain locations (in the middle of the city, you can't find a route home?????) and now, the backlight has just gone out, and it is not even 4 months old. This thing is not even worth $100, let alone $400. This is the experience we had AFTER we returned the first one. My coworker has the same model and she is on her 3rd Tom Tom (returned the first two) due to technical issues. Save yourself the headache and go with another brand. I will never buy another Tom Tom product again. We have a low end Garmin (Nuvi 260) and while it doesn't have the same advanced features, it also has never given us any problems at all.
