--Was Great , but now not so good--
I bought this in early 2009 and should start off by saying that I had to return the first unit after a few weeks. It was taking forever to pickup satellites. Navigon tech made some attempts at hard rebooting the device but ultimately had to return the unit for a replacement. The second one worked much better but several months later it started crashing with a low memory error msg. Navigon tech suggested that I perform a software upgrade which I did and another hard reboot, lost all my saved data again. After the software upgrade the thing sometimes takes too long to acquire satellites. I no longer select a destination from "recent trips" as this seems to cause the low memory issues.

Why put up with all this you ask, well because the traffic alerts were great, spot on to the tenth of a mile. Traveling through some boroughs of New York City I knew that any alerts noting slow moving traffic was just volume and I could ignore. Whenever the alerts contained "stopped" or "stop and go" traffic I would consider taking an alternate route.

Unfortunately the traffic alerts are no longer very useful, either I don't get them at all or you get them far too late.

As a GPS unit the directions work great, the audio alerts are clear, do not confuse and are given to you in enough time so you can react. The visual display is nice too, especially when it comes to merging roads and off ramps.

I really liked it in 2009 but I would NOT recommend it for its traffic functionality anymore.

--Great, except for what it is suppoed to do....--
I would give this 5 Stars if only it worked... sigh.

After searching reviews online and being swayed by an editors pick at LapTop magazine (which I love) I choose this nav system becasue it was affordable, had real time traffic, was good at what it was suppoed to do (navigate) and no bells and whistles I didn't need (mp3, blue tooth).

After using this device for 2 weeks I finally gave up and ordered a Garmin which works great.

Heres the deal...

Pros - easy to use, small and compact (less viewing screen, but fits nicely in any pocket), love the display easy to read, voice not annnoying, best feature is the dodge traffic icon (red flag) that pops up and with one click you are avoiding traffic nightmares. Garmin could learn something here.

Cons - It can NEVER find a signal near my house. I live right next to the ocean and maybe that has something to do with it??? It works great in other areas, but just not within 5-10 miles of home which is frustrating becasue that is where the journey always begins. So I give it one star for my location.

Ultimately I kept it as a backup but I never use it anymore.

--Broken Already--
I used my GPS sparingly since I got it in October 2008. When I did use it, it worked very well and was easy to use. The traffic feature was nice, but I also rarely used this since you have to navigate around the menus to get the specific traffic updates. The only complaint I had was the time it takes to get a signal seems to be really, really long - around 3-5 minutes. I'm practically at my destination by the time I get a signal. Also, I'd like for it to come with a wall charger.

Unfortunately, the last time I tried to turn it on, I get an error saying it can't load the software, and customer service says I need to send it in for repairs. So, it seems like these are not very hardy devices.

--small, little weight, exact, good visibility of the route--
This GPS is a far better one than the older navigon model (pocket loox) that I used before in the USA. The representation of the highway lanes for instance is remarkable. What could be better is: a little LED lamp to show the state of loading the accu; the accu itself looses much power overnight; sometimes the GPS takes too long to start working. But for this low price it's an offer.

--doesnt work and there is no customer service--
we had the navigon for 6 months and it was great until it stopped working. The screen came up with a message that said to contact customer service. There is no customer service number, only email. I emailed them twice and never got a response at all, so the navigon became garbage. Luckily Amazon accepted it as a return, for 80% of the purchase price, but it was still a waste of money.

I bought this GPS for me, because the price was right and my GPS is a distraction to handle while I was driving. My wife would never use a GPS, because he thought were too complicated / difficult to use. After you install the Garmin Nuvi 850 to my wife and I went for a trip set up. I was having some trouble getting the GPS to understand my voice so that my wife said the locations and instructions for speech recognition enabled GPS. He did exactly what he said on the first attempt. Needless to say that this GPS is now my wife and she is happy to use it. PS I bought a Nuvi 855 two weeks later for me!

Having the voice recognition is excellent. I bought a few months ago, bought a gift for my parents, because it is so easy to use.

I had the opportunity to learn all the features of this GPS that I bought to replace a Garmin 360 that has been lost or stolen. However, use as a browser-based, where I punch in addresses and then held in her lap and looked at him as a passenger, it seemed to work, as well as the 360, but the volume was so low that I could not hear with the radio. If you do not see him so I knew to hear the next command said it probably would have lost our time.

And this is after you set the volume to maximum. Subsequently, we decided to go through the FM radio and when the volume was ok, there was a lot of static and interference to make this a viable option. I'm going to check the manual to see if I can change the default to an FM station that is less prone to interference, but otherwise, I will probably return this unit. I also tried the voice recognition software still can not comment on its effectiveness.

Jay Byrd ( Lexington, SC USA )
I bought this model after owning the 205 and 255 Garmin GPS unit that made me very happy. Then I moved up to this due to a larger screen and has been strongly recommended by a family member. Frankly I was disappointed with what the battery life and voice recognition. The original battery has a new and, moreover, does not hold a charge for more than a couple of days, even when turned off and turned completely off the island. I never had this problem with other models. It works on voice recognition, at times, but hates my Southern accent and I hate yelling at you while I'm driving, so just use it manually.

I had this unit about 2 months and a couple of times it froze on me and I had to disconnect and remove the battery to reboot the system. Like other smaller units that will take you to the road right in a moment, but do not count on local brands to be exact. Another disappointment was the way multi-lane. When I saw that the screen has been announced in multi-lane at an intersection, then, of course, thought the screen has always been so. This way you really see the tracks and signs, not just the triangle moves along a map. My first trip I discovered that she rarely goes to the multi-lane and only when there is more of an off-track in the same direction. Bummer! Ending on a positive note, due to a larger screen that I can read easily.

The operation is perfect for some cities in Brazil, particularly São Paulo, with the identification of radar, and many other points of interest. Installation is easy, just put in and out with the GPS. Very good! Thank you!

Recently, he turned the grounds of the lakes of northern Italy and found the GPS an invaluable tool for us, especially since the street names are not always detectable in Europe. She not only helped us find our position, but was also useful for planning how long you allow us to reach our destination. A key to its plans for a drive on a vacation in Europe!

I have my Garmin Nuvi 205W. He does very well to where I want, even if you lose only once and must be recalculated. The problem is that sometimes brings me to dead end (places that has never been a path that never!). I was taken in the wrong place at times and sometimes you just have to wait a while 'to turn much to say. Overall, though not very well and about 92% of the time is right so forth. Other 6 or 7%, looks around a bit 'too long. That extra 1 or 2% that makes you go into a strange situation (I've only had for about a month and has done 2 or 3 times). Probably more on the star 3.5 because of the price and the fact that you lose sometimes, where you turn around and that was its original location.

Dataman Bill ( Palatine IL )
Nice compact unit with built Tourbook AAA. The unit does a good job for me from point A to point B. I had a problem with a software update and had to send a unit of Magellan. They retuned another unit within a week. The update is a big improvement, with additional custom buttons, QWERTY keyboard and the automatic change time zone. It 'was very good in a recent trip I took from Chicago to Virginia. When traveling in PA, we were able to pull up restaurants in GPS when traveling to call ahead for hours and make a reservation to come down quickly. The course was good.

I thought that if one is traveling off the beaten path, not necessarily choose the best or the fastest route. For example, on a trip to Burlington, WI, GPS sent me 20 miles off the road and added an additional 1 / 2 hour to my travel time. Also, I was parked in a shopping center in Lexington, KY in search of a Starbucks, the nearest was 0.3 miles away. The GPS found me in the parking lot, so he gave me a ride on the road to get there. When we arrived, we recognize the mall throughout the game. I truly need a cup of coffee.

I also bought the connecting traffic. He saved me from traveling from Indianapolis to Chicago by re-routing me around crowded fast. However, I also received warnings that have been children. Thus, the jury is still out.

I can not understand the spoken instructions from this unit. I drive a Ford F250 diesel truck and when they turn up the volume loud enough to hear the sound of the engine, the instructions are incomplete and unbalanced. I have to look at the screen to find out where you want to go instead of hearing his voice. ... Becomes a bit 'dangerous while driving.

The screen is small, but you get what you pay for. This is a low end unit. I would say that if you don't have a vehicle that has a lot of engine noise, this unit is ok. But if you do have a lot of engine noise, definitely buy something else.

Daniel N. Huse ( Woodbury, MN United States )
This is the second GPS unit I've ever had. The first is an older model with a small screen Garmin in black and white. I used a religious, probably 5 years in the United States, Canada, Hawaii and even, without any problem. In particular, I've never had my Garmin routing me crazy from point A to point B. At first power of this unit, I was impressed with the user interface pleasant. I never had to open the user manual at all. It 'was a breeze to find. However, the user interface is not the most important feature of a GPS unit. It 'important that the unit does its job - to get where you want to go. My first trip - a trip of 20 miles across the city - I met the problem immediately. Mind you, I was not in a new area with new roads.

I started in a city that has more than 100 years, and Magellan GPS made me go the way I knew I turned right, then turn right onto the street right next to each other, then turn left onto I crossed the street. There were no problems just by turning on the right the right way, but the Magellan took me away, "Overview", in a residential neighborhood. I was so fascinated by where I was routing followed me like an idiot, but I knew that I had missed my turn. Let's just say you do not want that to happen in a bad part of town, where the scenic route, which could mean driving in a dark alleyway or street when you could be on a main road. I used this disk, maybe 4-5 times after the first experience, and it worked. However, first impressions are lasting, and it will take time to put this experience behind us and believing in this unity. Again, my Garmin was a trusted co-pilot for many years. I even named her--Carmen my Garmin. Then, I kicked her to the curb when a better looking co-pilot came along. If Maggie my Magellan turns out to be a dimwit, I still have Carmen in her pouch.
