--Was Great , but now not so good--
I bought this in early 2009 and should start off by saying that I had to return the first unit after a few weeks. It was taking forever to pickup satellites. Navigon tech made some attempts at hard rebooting the device but ultimately had to return the unit for a replacement. The second one worked much better but several months later it started crashing with a low memory error msg. Navigon tech suggested that I perform a software upgrade which I did and another hard reboot, lost all my saved data again. After the software upgrade the thing sometimes takes too long to acquire satellites. I no longer select a destination from "recent trips" as this seems to cause the low memory issues.

Why put up with all this you ask, well because the traffic alerts were great, spot on to the tenth of a mile. Traveling through some boroughs of New York City I knew that any alerts noting slow moving traffic was just volume and I could ignore. Whenever the alerts contained "stopped" or "stop and go" traffic I would consider taking an alternate route.

Unfortunately the traffic alerts are no longer very useful, either I don't get them at all or you get them far too late.

As a GPS unit the directions work great, the audio alerts are clear, do not confuse and are given to you in enough time so you can react. The visual display is nice too, especially when it comes to merging roads and off ramps.

I really liked it in 2009 but I would NOT recommend it for its traffic functionality anymore.

--Great, except for what it is suppoed to do....--
I would give this 5 Stars if only it worked... sigh.

After searching reviews online and being swayed by an editors pick at LapTop magazine (which I love) I choose this nav system becasue it was affordable, had real time traffic, was good at what it was suppoed to do (navigate) and no bells and whistles I didn't need (mp3, blue tooth).

After using this device for 2 weeks I finally gave up and ordered a Garmin which works great.

Heres the deal...

Pros - easy to use, small and compact (less viewing screen, but fits nicely in any pocket), love the display easy to read, voice not annnoying, best feature is the dodge traffic icon (red flag) that pops up and with one click you are avoiding traffic nightmares. Garmin could learn something here.

Cons - It can NEVER find a signal near my house. I live right next to the ocean and maybe that has something to do with it??? It works great in other areas, but just not within 5-10 miles of home which is frustrating becasue that is where the journey always begins. So I give it one star for my location.

Ultimately I kept it as a backup but I never use it anymore.

--Broken Already--
I used my GPS sparingly since I got it in October 2008. When I did use it, it worked very well and was easy to use. The traffic feature was nice, but I also rarely used this since you have to navigate around the menus to get the specific traffic updates. The only complaint I had was the time it takes to get a signal seems to be really, really long - around 3-5 minutes. I'm practically at my destination by the time I get a signal. Also, I'd like for it to come with a wall charger.

Unfortunately, the last time I tried to turn it on, I get an error saying it can't load the software, and customer service says I need to send it in for repairs. So, it seems like these are not very hardy devices.

--small, little weight, exact, good visibility of the route--
This GPS is a far better one than the older navigon model (pocket loox) that I used before in the USA. The representation of the highway lanes for instance is remarkable. What could be better is: a little LED lamp to show the state of loading the accu; the accu itself looses much power overnight; sometimes the GPS takes too long to start working. But for this low price it's an offer.

--doesnt work and there is no customer service--
we had the navigon for 6 months and it was great until it stopped working. The screen came up with a message that said to contact customer service. There is no customer service number, only email. I emailed them twice and never got a response at all, so the navigon became garbage. Luckily Amazon accepted it as a return, for 80% of the purchase price, but it was still a waste of money.

Don't buy this GPS. Navigon has withdrawn from the US market and new maps are sparse and likely to become completely unavailable.

It's a shame because its a very good GPS and I would otherwise rate it 4 stars. It's been reliable and the traffic feature is inexpensive and has kept me out of trouble more than once.

I bought this the 2100 max just about a year ago. Its screen and features are more than adequate for my needs. When I am in the city, it always gets me where I want to go. But I don't recommend it when in rural areas. It also doesn't work at all in Hawaii. When I first bought the unit, I could get technical help over the phone. Now, I cannot even get them to answer emails. I don't know about the other vendors, but if you think you will ever need help with the product, don't expect any. Once you have purchased Navigon, you are on-your-own.

I had this GPS for last one year until stolen from my vehicle on last 27th Nov (Black Friday). I ordered the same model on the same day online....! (Imagine I am in love with my GPS). I have used and compared TomTom, Germin and many others with this Navigon 2100 Max GPS Navigation - 4.3 but this GPS is on the Top of the Food Chain...!
Any true 3D GPS (most people confuse a 2D as 3D GPS) usually cost a lot like Germin Nuvi or the New Model of Tom Tom just arrived. it is $350 ~ $450. But this 2100 max is only $109 (I paid on last Black Friday). But my first one I bought at $176 from Amazon, years before.
Only complain is 4.3 inch is too small for me. I wish it would like 5" screen size. The bigger the GPS the easier to view at crowded road.
P.S. Map update works just fine. I read one review who cannot update new map. I did my Map update Q3 just yesterday and week before. Works like a dream..

K. Blizzard ( Columbus, OH )
I never really thought I needed a GPS, especially when I needed to justify spending money for such a device. After getting this GPS, I'm sold. I haven't had much experience with other GPS devices but this one seems to be top of the line. Its easy to use for a beginner. My girlfriend has one from another brand that I have used and it isn't nearly as good as this one.

This thing is so helpful. I love how accurate the maps are and how accurate each turn is. It always knows exactly where I need to turn and tells me so that there's no confusion. A lot of times there are 2 roads close together and I may be unsure which one to take, especially if I used my girlfriend's GPS. This Navigon always makes it clear which one I need to take. The same goes for on the highway and which exit and even which lane to be in as you pass merging highways! I was on a recently renamed highway and even though the highway name was incorrect, every turn and lane change was still exact and got me to my destination with ease. It also helped me change lanes to switch between highways over a congested bridge just by listening to it. There was way too much to watch for so I couldn't look at the GPS. So it was very helpful that the GPS and voice were so accurate.

I highly recommend this Navigon and would do so to my family and friends.

I bought my Navigon a little over a year ago. It's performance has been mixed, in line with much of the reviews here, but I've generally been happy with it.

However, I can unequivocally state that you should NOT buy this product. Navigon has abruptly left the North American market, leaving customers, even those who purchased a device and map updates within the year, almost completely without support. If you buy one of these, you're buying a dead device with no hope of updates.

Piece of junk. It broke 3 times and now they won't fix it. NOt a good model. Cheaply built. Spend the money and get the more expensive one. That's what I did.

We purchased this GPS unit based on reviews and price. But we were not impressed when put to the road test. The route it took us to get to the turnpike was complicated and confusing. Plugging in new destinations or different trip parameters seemed equally complicated. On the whole, this GPS did not seem to be at all intuitive in its use as compared to a Garmin I had previously. It got to the point that I wanted to consult an old fashioned map before relying on the GPS directions. I would not recommend this model to anyone.

I purchased a Navigon 2000s from [...[ about 5 months ago, for about $100. I knew I was buying an entry-level device, with a cheap price. It has some really nice features: turn-by-turn audible instructions with street and road names; lane instructions. With the right option turned on, it will warn you when you exceed the speed limits (assuming it has the right speed limit), but this gets annoying if you go through a lot of school zones, because it will yell "caution" if you are going faster than the conditional speed limit of the school zone.

It lacks some features, too. When it picks a route you know is not where you want to go, it is not easy to force it to use the route you want. You have to pick an arbitrary intermediate stop. You can look at a map and pick a location to add to the route, instead of using an address, but it is not intuitive or direct. You must save your current route plan, exit route planning, and display the map, which starts by showing the entire U.S. After zooming in by pressing the + many times or dragging a rectangle around the area you want to zoom to, find the location and add to your locations list. Then go back to your route plan (which you saved or start a new one) and add your new location and re-order your stops to get the right sequence.

What I didn't know is that the maps were out-of-date and an update of the maps is NOT included with the purchase from TigerDirect. The update for the map data for this device is $80, so to get this device with the current maps is $180... not so cheap!!! For a little more, I could have had a Garmin with a wide screen (and at least the initial updates to bring the device up-to-date).

Next item I discovered is that although the maps were out-of-date, they were also the most-current maps available. I found myself being told to turn right onto a one-way street to go around the block to arrive at a location 3 doors up the street to the left... but it is NOW a two-way street and has been for two years.

I found several Interstate highways in the MO, AR, LA, TN, MS, and AL area with significant errors. At one interchange in MS, I was directed to take an exit, then the on-ramp, for no apparent reason.

The Points-of-Interest are unreliable for major fast-food chains. I was directed to a Subway Restaurant which was not there and, when I inquired about it locally, I was told it had been gone for 5 years.

My most-recent issue is that I discovered that there is an update to the software on the 2000s. I attempted to load it and received a series of cryptic errors, such as "the directory is corrupted", when trying to back up the device (with no indication as to the identity or location of the corrupted directory), and "undefined", when trying to download and update the device. There does not appear to be any information to help with this.

I would NOT recommend purchase of this device, unless you want to experiment with GPS before buying a real one or are looking for a nifty-looking paper-weight.

TruPleasure ( Chicago, IL United States )
I purchased a Navigon unit for myself and absolutely loved it. I found it to be much more accurate than Mapquest and since you receive voice instructions in addition to a realtime map it is extremely easy to follow the directions. My sister asked to borrow my unit because she was traveling out of state and wanted to try it out. She said she had always wanted a navigation unit because of the frequent travel she does in her car, but her husband was extrememly skeptical about their accuracy. My sister fell in love with my Navigon and borrowed it several times. Finally, on a trip with her husband, he was able to see the unit in action and counldn't believe that the Navigon was so accurate right down to the landmarks and restaurants it point out. They loved it so much that I bought them this one for Christmas (so I could get mine back). I appreciate the updates that keep the unit timely and even in rather rural areas the Navigon has gotten me to the door every time. It's a great navigation system as well as phenomenal source of information for Zagat rates hotels, restuarants and area attractions.

I have been using Navigon 5100 for the last 6 months. I am not really satisfied with this due to following issues.
1)Searching for points of interests is a complex task. I dont find the required POIs that I look for
2)User interface is not really great. Touch screen does not respond few times.
3)Route calculation and recalculation is not faster. It takes few seconds before it shows the route. I end up waiting for it.

However, the only thing that I liked is the lane assistance. I have used Mio C230, Garmin NUVI in the past. I feel they are far better than this Navigon unit. Mio C230 is really good in POIs and route recalculation.

The Navigon 5100 is the perfect GPS for my family. I have had one for 2 years and love it, and I just got one for my parents for Christmas. There are tons of points of interest already loaded which is great for finding new places while driving around. When difficult intersections or roads are encountered, the Navigon not only tells you what you should do, but also shows you which lane to be in with a picture. The ease of entering addresses and searching for places is great. I also like that I can switch the view from portrait to landscape to be able to see a wider or longer view of the area. The battery does not hold a charge for more than an hour at full brightness, but if you use it in a car, you just plug it in the lighter. There is a feature that allows you to save your current location which is great for parking downtown and shopping, then finding the shortest route back to your car because the GPS can give walking or driving directions. The Navigon does like to read certain abreviations which can make you laugh when you are told to go to the "A-T-L" airport instead of Atlanta or A.T.L. airport.

Good price, fast shipping, lots of features including lifetime traffic updates with no additional fees. However Navigon is no longer providing service in the US. I would not recommend that device to anyone due to lack of customer service. Also POI are very limited on the included software. It is better to buy Garmin or Tomtom.
......................................................

C. Logan ( Oregon, USA )
I have really liked Navigon GPS products because they're packed with features that you usually wouldn't find on a Garmin or a TomTom at a similar price. Here are some of the features:

-RealityView at highway interchanges, which actually really does help with knowing which lane to be in at the upcoming exit. We previously owned a Navigon 2100 and I can tell that they have improved this feature in the 7200T-- it now shows a bit more detail.
-LaneAssist Pro works well, but only in very large cities. We currently live in Milwaukee, and I've never seen the LaneAssist pop-up. But when we drive down to Chicago (even the suburbs of Chicago), suddenly the feature starts to work fairly well.
-the Bluetooth feature seems to recognise my Blackberry phone. Apparently, it doesn't recognise all phones, though.
-the landmark feature (that shows major landmarks on the maps) is basically useless-- some of the landmarks I could barely recognise. Besides, when it tries to draw those 3D images on the screen, it seems to slow down the device a bit. I eventually just turned that feature off.
-it takes a couple of minutes to get a good satellite signal, which is fairly normal in most GPS units.
-the points-of-interest (POIs) on most Navigon devices are not very plentiful. For general traveling, you can find a restaurant, a gas station, and even Zagat-rated restaurants and hotels, but don't expect to find a local grocery store or the nearest Walmart. In other words, it works fine when you're looking for any restaurant, but it probably won't have a lot of the specific POIs that you might need. I think having a very comprehensive POI database is more of a Garmin-specific strength.
-the way that Navigon designed the power plug on many of its devices is just horrible. Why would they put a non-bendable power cord plugging into the bottom of the unit? This limits how low you can mount the GPS on your dashboard, otherwise the power plug won't fit. Designing a GPS mount with the power cord built-in would have been a much better idea.
-we have owned this device for about four months now and I've had it freeze on me about four or five times now. When it freezes, I didn't notice immediately, but the map was frozen on the screen and I had to do a hard reset. I don't know if this is specific to the unit that I received, but it can be a bit annoying when it happens in a place where you don't know where you're going.
-the text-to-speech feature is pretty good-- I can almost always understand the voice. Some words it pronounces amazingly well, but some words (even very common words!) are not pronounced properly at all. For instance, it pronounces the word 'west' as "whesht," yet every once in a while it will pronounce it properly! Another word it says oddly is 'avenue,' which it pronounces as "avernue."

All in all, I like Navigon products and don't regret buying this device. If you're a geek and get along fairly well with electronics, then this might be the device for you. But, if you're like my parents and don't really even understand how the internet works, then maybe you should look for a simpler device like the TomTom.

S. McNally ( NJ )
i love the voice entry and that 'she' re directs you when you go off course. i HATE the customer support- they only accept emails via their website and ask for 48 hrs to return emails!!!!! 48 hrs! the phone number is not 800 and you have to google navigon to get it
......................................................

L. Williams ( Clearwater, FL, USA )
Even though you can buy this Navigon GPS on Amazon, don't. The company no longer operates in the U.S. and you won't get support or updates. You will be left out in the cold with nothing to do but return the unit to Amazon. Instead check out the various GPS's from Magellan (the 1440 is a great unit), Garmin or TomTom.

Navigon now only makes an app for the iPhone 3G or 3GS for North America, but I'm reluctant to even try it, since they closed their doors in the U.S. in a flash, leaving users of their GPS's supportless.

The newest map updates require a 4Gb card. The unit will only work with certain SD cards. I found that a 4Gb sandisk SDHC card class 2 works fine with this device. The support is not as it once was since, apparentely, the company is pulling out of the GPS hardware market in North America. But I hear they are still a major player in Europe. Also, they are still selling GPS software for iphones in North America. Otherwise the unit seems to work fine and the maps are very nice. I hope they come back to actively sell hardware in North America in the future.

David McMillan ( Tennessee USA )
Pros: Decent navigator with voice prompts and a reasonable price.
Cons: Map updates may not fit in the installed memory card and no spec for larger cards. No useful tech support.

I have had this unit for two years. It is an adequate performer with some quirks in routing, but I have no experience with other units to compare routing methods. I bought a three year map update from Amazon. The promised "quarterly" updates have been sporadic. I recently received a notice of a new map update. When I tried to load the map, the Navigon software told me my 2 GB SD card was too small to hold the map and I should get a 4 GB card. Researching SD cards showed that 4GB cards are now SDHC. I went to Navigon web support and could find no spec indicating that the 2100 could use SDHC. The only way to contact Navigon is by email from their site - there is no contact phone. The web site promises a reply in 24 to 48 hours. I sent an email asking for confirmation of the type of SD card to use. That was 5 days ago.

Update 1/6/2010. Never heard from Navigon so I decided to go for the SDHC 4GB. It did work, so maps can be updated.

I got this navigon when it was very cheap. It has served its purpose, but it definitely has had some problems. The routes it tries to get me to take are sometimes illogical and ridiculously out of the way, and I have gotten lost following its directions multiple times. That being said, I've had it longer than a year and it still works fine. It has proved useful many times, and for its price its hard to complain too much. If you need a gps, and are poor like me, then I suppose I would recommend the Navigon 2100.

This product didn't work at all for me. Sure I got a refurbish product. But I still thought it should and would work. I am very pleased and happy about how fast my refund came back to me. I have since went to out and bought TomTom, so far so good. I'm still trying to learn what all it do.

This GPS unit has too many quirks. Move on and find one from a more reputable company. The routing is weird. It often routes an unnecessarily long path. Additionally, the design has not been thought out, and the plug is in the absolutely least convenient location. This seems like a small deal, but in reality it is very intrusive. The GUI is sluggish and the buttons don't respond like most other units that I have used. The POIs are not very thorough. Finally, Navigon's warranty policy is pathetic. If there is a problem, and you send it in, and if they disagree with you, they charge you a $30 before they charge you to fix it. I agree with "TheDeciders" more thorough analysis.

I used my GPS parsimony I took in October 2008. When I've used, it worked very well and was easy to use. The function of the traffic was nice, but I have rarely used this provision because it has to navigate through menus to get the latest traffic information. The only complaint I had was the time to get a signal seems to be very, very long - about 3-5 minutes. Are almost at their destination in time to get a signal. Also, I would come with a charger from the wall.

Unfortunately, the last time I tried to turn it on, I get an error saying it can't load the software, and customer service says I need to send it in for repairs. So, it seems like these are not very hardy devices.

This GPS is much better than the old model Navigon (Pocket LOOX) that I used before the United States. The representation of highway lanes, for example, is remarkable. What's better: a LED light to indicate the condition of limited load of ACCU, the battery will still lose a lot of power during the night, sometimes the GPS is too long to start working. But for this low price is offered.

In addition to purchasing this product a year ago, this product has worked on the car for many trips around, they took me in the right direction. However, is that if you do not know the area in which (or around that) you are traveling.
If you know the general area of travel (such as product research on the site and see if the product is able to follow when you "make a mistake," this book is one of the best, however, lost me for roads that I knew was not a good way to go.

The product comes preloaded with the traffic application preinstalled, with no other activation setup needed. However, the user might want to register their product on the Internet at Navigon's official Website. Outside of that, it charges up pretty quickly, and, although it lacks a battery-charging status light(unlike it's first version, from the previous year), this year's model tends to charge up, just a bit faster.

I like the fact that you can put the item on hold "by pressing a button on the screen. And even if you forget to turn it off by pressing the button or using this new option for stand-by voice, the voice we now know enough to be extinct, or at least enough to put him to sleep.
I may be stating things that you may have already read on this site, but I don't know what else to say. I love this line of GPS's more than any of the others on today's market. Thank you Navigon, for putting out such a great product. Keep up the good work.
