J. Green ( Richmond, VA ) I bought this as a gift and just finished setting it up. It was hard to find instructions. They're available on the TomTom web site, but can be hard to locate. In order to get the free latest map version within three days, you need to follow these instructions: [...]
First I downloaded the TomTom Home software and entered my email address and password to set up an account, when prompted. It automatically checked for updates and I allowed those to be installed. Then, I got the updated map for free. A couple important steps for that(after downloading the TomTom Home software to your computer) are to (1) backup your device using the Home software and (2) on your computer in the Home software click Tools > Use Latest Map Guarantee. This process took a couple hours at least. It was slow to back up and slow to download. (Note that I did not have to delete anything in order for the new map to fit in internal memory - perhaps the backup process took care of that.)
But all looks well!

Mark ( Huntington Beach, CA United States ) Have not even owned this 1 month and already have had to send it back (TomTom DID NOT pay for shipping and it still does not work. Would not buy again. My cheaper Garmin never has given me a problem.

Denny Roche I bought this without listening to the other reviews. There is no sd card slot for added memory space. You cannot download the new map, without removing the old one first. Then the problem arose; The new map download from Tom Tom failed every time; I was on with tech support for days, until I ordered a replacement. I waited for exact instructions from tech support, for installing the updated map. Again it failed every time. They assumed it was my computers fault, but I sent it back for a refund, and bought the Garmin nuvi260w, updated it's map, and WOW it worked the first time.So it clearly was not my computer, but a software problem with Tom Tom themselves. ( PLUS THE GARMIN HAS A SD MEMORY SLOT FOR ADDED APPS, AND OTHER STUFF AVAILABLE) Sorry, but Tom Tom dropped the ball on this one.

Kitty Hawk Received this unit faster than expected and the price paid was very competitive. It worked out of the box. Downloaded the map updates right away to make sure the transfer worked. No problem with updates. The operators manual left something to be desired. Most information can be found on the Tom Tom web site. Tried it out on long and short trip. Works as advertised.
