Garmin eTrex H Description

Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts on a budget, the Garmin eTrex H GPS navigator helps you navigate your way through the toughest terrain. The unit is equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, which locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the eTrex H to help you find your way when you need it the most. And just like the original eTrex, this little yellow wonder is intuitive and rugged, with a lightweight housing that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The eTrex H is a breeze to use, with five buttons on either side of the navigator facilitating one-handed operation. The four-level gray LCD display, meanwhile, is easy to read in a shade or daylight. And you needn't fret should the weather turn, as the eTrex H is IPX7 waterproof, so it can withstand an accidental splash or dunk in the water and still continue to perform.

Functionally, the navigator stores up to 500 waypoints in its memory for easy retrieval, with names and graphic symbols to highlight the selections. Users will also appreciate Garmin's exclusive TrackBack feature, which lets you reverse your track (up to 20 reversible routes) and navigate back to your starting point. And the automatic track log offers 10 saved tracks (with 10,000 points), along with the ability to retrace your path in both directions. Other details include a hunting and fishing calculator, sun and moon information, and a serial PC interface.

The eTrex H, which runs for up to 17 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.0 by 4.4 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

My daughter was involved in Geocaching. After much research, I decided on the eTrex for use. This unit is ideal for the final conclusion of the Geocache - is very precise with their coordinates. Even though I used to take me from point A to point B - which was not designed for driving directions. When you go to the geocaching website you can print a map of the positions of some geo caching so you would need direction or to use a GPS for vehicles. ETrex will lead to a permanent site provided by coordiates with all the problems - so the price can not be beat. ETrex one seconds that I bought for my daughter and we have a close race as to who comes first. - So this is the revision 2-Etrex and both were great

He received the article yesterday, and put a little 'old batteries in it. The batteries have shown OK, so I put the device in a window that faces west, and left there for a couple of hours. Nothing happened, were not acquired satellites. Having already seen the comments for the original purchase, with a couple of different times, I began to think. This afternoon, I put a new battery for the H eTrex, found an open parking lot, no trees within about 100 meters away. The satellites were acquired within 5 minutes it seemed, perhaps even within 5 minutes. Given this, and assuming that the characteristics of other works, as described, the eTrex H certainly should serve as a hand held base unit.

After almost getting lost on a night hike I wanted a GPS. I tried to use my Iphone 3GS but it wouldn't pick up the satellites under the trees in the Pacific Northwest forests. Plus, I had it in my pocket and fell on it, luckily I didn't break it.

So, I wanted a waterproof, rugged, easy to use, reliable GPS that worked well under heavy tree cover. I couldn't be happier, this was cheap, and meets all of my requirements. I decided the black and white screen was fine, with backlight, and decided I didn't need all those other bells and whistles the expensive ones have. The lack of bells and whistles makes this easy to use. It has everything you need with tracks, routes, waypoints and track back.

As other's have said if you want to load topo maps this is not the unit for you. But, if you simply want to be able to follow your route back home when hiking this is great! Other's also mentioned it does not come with a cable if you want to hook it up to the computer, but I see no reason to, it works perfect with the version of firmware it ships with and there are no topo maps to load. So, I never plan to hook it to a computer.

The accuracy is amazing even under heavy trees with no view of the sky. With a clear view of the sky I get up to 13 feet of accuracy. In heavy tree cover I average around 50 feet, which is amazing without a view of the sky.

Some people complained in reviews the system took forever to find the satellites. That must be from old firmware versions. I have version 3.30 on my unit and it took maybe two minutes to find the satellites initially if that. After the initial start up out of the box it usually takes around 30 seconds or so. The accuracy is amazing even inside my house.

If you want a unit to follow your track so you can find your car, that is easy to use, accurate in a thick forest, water proof, rugged, and with a decent battery life (If using the right batteries), without needing a color screen, topo maps, or computer syncing, get this unit!!
